I’ve recently finished reading Murder in Old Bombay by Nev March, who won an award for First Crime Novel from the Mystery Writers of America with this book. I discovered Nev March in a webinar that she gave about writing and publishing, and I’ve been a fan ever since. While I do not normally read detective fiction, I do enjoy Sherlock Holmes mysteries, and March’s protagonist, Captain Jim, is also a fan of Holmes, so I liked him immediately. What I loved about March’s writing is that she takes a real life event – two women who fell from a balcony 200 feet high – that was declared a suicide, but had a mystery around it. The author draws readers into the city streets, country roads, and royal palaces of India in the late 1800s, and her characters’ lives are exotic, mysterious, heartbreaking, and glamorous all at the same time. Fans of mystery or fans of fiction in general will enjoy Nev March’s debut novel. I’m looking forward to reading the second in the series soon.
