What I’m Reading: Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid

My first novel of the New Year (it’s only the 21st, so still “new”) is Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I am a fan of Reid – Malibu Rising and Daisy Jones and the Six are my top favorites, plus Evelyn Hugo and Carrie Soto are right behind those. I liked Atmosphere, but admittedly not as much as the others I just mentioned. The two main characters are interesting and their journeys are fascinating to follow. The secondary characters fall flat for me. There is some family tension which adds fuel to the primary story line’s fire, but other than that, I felt the secondary characters were not as interesting as they are in Reid’s other books, especially Malibu Rising and Evelyn Hugo. The “secret” kept through the first half of Atmosphere becomes obvious rather quickly, and then it’s a matter of time – both the time of the space journey itself, and the timeline for the hidden relationship. Overall I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Hidden Figures, Apollo 13, or any other space exploration story. The writing is superb; Reid is a master at her craft.
