In her inspirational book, Dream More, Dolly Parton challenges readers to dream more, learn more, care more, and be more, in the same way that she rose above childhood poverty and realized her dreams. In fact, she has credited her success to her own childhood dreams of stardom, glamour, and beauty. And yet the irony of Dolly was that her outer, largely manufactured beauty does not reflect her genuine, inner beauty. “I’m real where it counts, on the inside,” she has often said. She was aware that her celebrity status meant that she was a role-model for so many. She believed that the irony of ‘being more’ actually meant being less: “To be more makes me less apt to judge…to be less apt to make excuses for my own behavior, and to be less apt to be self-serving and self-righteous.” Dolly was a spiritual person, reminding herself often that God has plans for her, and she needed to ask for guidance when she needed it. She was not one to complain, at least not in public, and her presence made others feel blessed, special, and seen. All our lives are better because we were blessed with hers. Dream More is a quick read, and yet it packs a punch. It would be a welcome addition to a classroom shelf, home library, and book club.
