It’s that time of year…lazy days of reading, drawing, bike riding, fishing, or whatever kids want to do. Parents looking for a book to engage their young readers will be happy with Under the Egg by Laura Marx Fitzgerald. Set in Manhattan, the mystery around a painting unfolds as young Theodora tries to figure out what it was her grandfather wanted her to know about it. Trigger warning: the grandfather dies in the opening scene, muttering something to Theodora, and setting off the mystery. Another trigger warning: Theodora’s mother is not well and they need money, fast, to stay in their house. While I’m not a fan of kid-characters being forced to solve adult problems, Theodora is a likable protagonist, and the art history is interesting. I am also a fan of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (one of my happy places) and reading a story that includes it as one of the settings is a definite plus in my book. I would recommend Under the Egg to older middle-grade readers because of the trigger warnings previously mentioned.
