This Is Not About Us is the first novel I have read by Allegra Goodman, but it will not be the last. I enjoyed her writing style, her characters, and the tone of the novel. There are multiple points of view, yet it is never confusing; time marches on, but readers do not lag behind. Goodman uses details of seasons changing, pregnancy, school, and other domestic details to move the story along within the framework of three generations of one Jewish-American family. The arguments and disappointments that separate them from one another are relatable and serious, yet not overly dramatic for the sake of increasing the tension. They are heartfelt and sincere with enough sadness to make them real: divorce, lack of grandchildren, siblings not speaking to one another, fear of rejection, judgement. No one character dominates as a protagonist and the reader feels drawn to several characters for different reasons: a mom bringing her daughters to ballet; a sister baking cake that is a cherished family recipe; a grandmother wanting to share the birth of a grandchild with an estranged sibling. I enjoyed This Is Not About Us very much, and I look forward to reading more from Allegra Goodman.
