I thoroughly enjoyed Leanne Morgan’s memoir, What in the World?! I have read several memoirs over the last few years written by women who have succeeded, achieved, and overcome whatever life threw at them. Among my favorites are Cher, Ina Garten, Belle Burden, Jennifer Lauck, Jeannette Walls, and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau. I now add Leanne Morgan to this list. Her story is optimistic, honest, and of course funny as heck. She has views of motherhood and marriage that one cannot help but admire and laugh at because she wants you to. She laughs at herself and the trouble she got herself in, the predicaments common to being a newlywed, and to being a new mom. Not to mention her dating horror stories before she fell for Chuck Morgan (who fell for her first she will tell you). Hers is a modern day success story of domestic life, happiness, and spirit. She writes, “If I took that job (manager of the makeup counter at a local store), my life wouldn’t go anywhere…My world would shrink to five square feet–the amount of space behind that counter” (53). She listened to that little voice in her head, rather than the voice of her boss saying she’d be happy with this promotion and the bump in salary (“It was pitiful, before poverty level”). She knew she wanted and deserved more than that. And she got it.
